On 8 April 2010, the Education Ministers of the Commonwealth of Australia and the Republic of India signed a Joint Ministerial Statement reaffirming the Australian and Indian Governments' commitment to continue to expand collaboration in education, training and research between both countries. In the Statement, both Governments agreed to set up an Australia India Education Council (AIEC) as a bi-national body with representation from academia, policy makers and industry to interact on issues related to education and to further collaborate between both sides.
The inaugural meeting of the AIEC was held in New Delhi in August 2011. It was co-chaired by the Hon Shri Kapil Sibal, former Indian Minister for Human Resource Development and Senator the Hon Chris Evans, Australian Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research.
